The only purpose of the license is to count the number of CryptDisk installations, which will determine the level of effort I will put into supporting it. If it turns out that nobody is using CryptDisk, I won't feel any obligation to support it.
If registering were not mandatory, very few would do so and the installations would be grossly undercounted. It is in everyone's best interest to have an accurate install count, even if anonymously.
Registration lets me count the number of actual installations, which can be vastly different than the number of downloads.
The license request is time-sensitive and is valid for only 16 hours. Check that your computer's system clock is accurate and synchronized to GMT.

No. Once registered, it is a permanent, full-featured license for the current version of CryptDisk. Future versions may require new licenses, but upgrading is always optional and registered versions will never expire.
NOTE: Upgrading from CryptDisk.exe versions prior to 2.19.2869 will need a new license.
No. Each license is tied to the computer's network name. You will need to generate a new license for each computer.
No. CryptDisk.exe will never open an internet connection of any kind. (This is a requirement for any high-trust program.) CryptDisk does not collect or transmit any usage data of any kind. Generating the license is my one and only point of contact.
All license management is done by copying and pasting text between your web browser and the CryptDisk.exe console. CryptDisk will be perfectly happy on an air-gapped computer.
This would have no effect on existing CryptDisk installations, but would block new installs. In this case, I will have made provisions to automatically have a universal license file made available.
Yes. Contact information is optional, a valid license can be generated without any contact info.
Yes. If there are any future bugfixes or updates, your email address lets me inform you when it becomes available. This is the only notification method. CryptDisk.exe will never open an internet connection, so it cannot proactively check for updates.
If an exploit is ever found for CryptDisk, you will be notified only by email.
If CryptDisk.net is ever shut down, a universal license file will be sent via email.
Yes. Run the license request command on the air-gapped computer and sneaker-net the output to an internet computer to generate the license. Then sneaker-net the license register command text back to the air-gapped computer.
The license register command is time-sensitive, and will expire in 16 hours. The air-gapped computer's system clock must be synchronized to GMT.
No. I have gone to extreme lengths to make this impossible. CryptDisk does not contain any "back doors" or "skeleton keys". The fundamental purpose of data encryption is to render the data unreadable by anyone without the key and password. If you do not understand this or are unwilling to take the risk, you should not be encrypting your data. If this is a question you are even thinking about asking, you should not be using CryptDisk.
